For work in a potentially explosive atmosphere, first match the exact model, its marking and conditions of use. Then compare the light's format, beam, weight and runtime. A manufacturer's name or professional-light description alone does not establish suitability for a particular zone.
What do ATEX and IECEx mean?
ATEX is the European framework for equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres. Directive 2014/34/EU sets requirements for this equipment and protective systems. IECEx is an international certification system based on IEC standards for explosive atmospheres. They are related but distinct systems; one name does not replace checking the other. [1] [2]
For purchasing, request documents matching the exact model designation and supplied configuration. Check an individual IECEx certificate through its number and the official IECEx system rather than relying solely on sales copy.
Why do the zone and exact model designation matter?
Zones describe the likelihood and duration of an explosive atmosphere. Zone 0 concerns an explosive atmosphere of gas, vapour or mist that is present continuously, for long periods or frequently. Dust zones use different designations. A gas-zone marking does not automatically establish dust-zone suitability. [3]
Match the workplace documentation to the light's marking, including the applicable group, temperature and other certificate conditions. Check every suffix in the model designation. A similar name or appearance does not confirm identical approval.
Handheld, headlamp or right angle?
| Format | Practical use | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld | Aiming the beam during inspections and rounds | Switch access, carrying method, beam shape and weight |
| Headlamp | Lighting while keeping hands free | Comfort and the specifically approved attachment method; do not assume every helmet is compatible |
| Right angle | Lighting beside equipment or a work area, depending on the version | Head movement, clip/magnet where fitted and suitability for the intended working method |
The shape does not establish certification. Check ATEX/IECEx documents and permitted conditions separately for each candidate.
Read output, beam and runtime together
Lumens describe the amount of light. Beam distance and shape help assess whether you need to inspect a distant detail or illuminate a wider working area. A higher lumen figure alone does not establish suitability for the job.
Compare output and runtime within the same operating mode. For the 3415MZ0 example, the manufacturer's FL1 table states: [4]
| Mode | Output | Runtime | Beam distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot + flood | 329 lm | 6 h | 133 m |
| Flood | 174 lm | 15 h | 38 m |
| Spot | 185 lm | 14 h | 134 m |
Maximum output, longest runtime and maximum distance come from different rows. They must not be combined into a claim of 329 lm for 15 hours. Published runtime is not a promise of unchanged initial brightness throughout that period. Review the manufacturer's measurement method and instructions when planning work.
Example: Peli 3415MZ0
The Peli 3415MZ0 is a right angle light with a pivoting head and magnetic clip. Its official product page lists ATEX Zone 0 and IECEx ia for this model. That does not establish suitability for every atmosphere or every power configuration. [4] [5]
The store lists SKU 034150-0303-241E. For a professional purchase, compare the ordered version with the actual supplied light's marking, certificate and instructions. A published model certificate and verification of an individual supplied unit are different checks.
Approved batteries and documents
Battery size alone does not establish that a particular type is approved. Before use, check the permitted power configuration in the exact model's current instructions and certificate, and follow their conditions. Do not assume any same-size battery or rechargeable substitute is acceptable. [5] [6]
If documents disagree, obtain clarification from the manufacturer before selecting the configuration. For the 3415MZ0, this guide therefore does not publish a universal approved-battery list or a full Ex code.
Selection and B2B enquiries
Send the required zone and workplace-documentation requirements, preferred format, beam application, required runtime and quantity. Suitability for use should be established with the responsible workplace specialist and manufacturer documentation.
Check the current online 3415MZ0 version or request a B2B quotation and documentation check. The Lights collection contains several types of lighting; ATEX approval must be checked for each individual model.
Frequently asked questions
Are all Peli lights ATEX certified?
Do not assume that. The collection contains different lights and lighting systems. Check the exact model's documents.
Does Zone 0 also mean dust approval?
No. A gas marking does not establish dust-zone use. The intended application needs its own confirmed relevant marking.
Does the 3415MZ0 provide maximum lumens for its longest runtime?
Not according to its published FL1 table. The 329 lm figure accompanies spot + flood and 6 h; 15 h refers to flood at 174 lm.
Can I use any battery of the correct size?
Do not assume so. Check the approved type and configuration in the current documents and follow the conditions for the exact model.
