The shell determines the external format; the interior determines the layout and space around your equipment. Foam can be practical for a kit that usually contains the same items. An empty case makes sense when you already have a suitable insert or plan an individual solution. Padded dividers or TrekPak™ may help with changing layouts where they are confirmed for the selected model.
When is factory foam useful?
Foam gives each item a defined position. Versions with Pick N Pluck™ foam let you shape the layout by removing pre-scored sections. Before removing or cutting material, arrange the complete kit, mark its outline and check that every item can be lifted out. Once material is removed, the insert no longer has its original shape. [1]
This can suit an instrument, measuring accessories or a service kit that returns to the same layout. If you frequently change most of the equipment, consider whether each new layout would require a replacement or new insert.
Factory foam does not always mean the same number of layers or pre-scored cubes. Check the foam type and package contents for the exact configuration.
When should you choose a case without foam?
Consider no foam when you have a confirmed compatible insert, when the equipment already has suitable protective packaging or when you are ordering a custom layout. An empty shell offers more initial space, but does not organise or hold the contents in position.
Check what the no-foam version actually includes. Do not expect dividers or a lid organiser unless listed in the chosen configuration. Plan how sensitive equipment will be supported, separated and removed before ordering.
How do you measure equipment and allow room for protection?
- List everything travelling together: the device, cables, power supply and accessories.
- Measure each item's maximum length, width and height, including connectors, handles and projecting parts.
- Draw a top-view layout. Separate items that should not touch and allow finger space for removal.
- Compare the layout with the case's internal measurements and base/lid depths. External measurements describe transport size, not the available equipment space.
- Allow protective material beneath, above, around and between the items. Required thickness depends on the equipment, weight and application; one clearance does not suit every kit.
Equipment matching a published internal measurement exactly leaves no room for cushioning. For a complex layout, send a sketch and photographs before selecting the case. Designing an insert may require checking the actual equipment shape and case geometry.
Foam, padded dividers and TrekPak
| Interior | Useful for | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Foam | A fixed, repeatable layout | Foam type/layers, material between cut-outs and replacement set availability |
| Padded dividers | Frequent equipment and compartment changes | A compatible set, compartment sizes and equipment height |
| TrekPak | An organised layout with panels sized for the equipment | The exact kit, material for later changes and included components |
| No foam | An existing or individually designed insert | Package contents and how the equipment will be held |
Peli describes TrekPak as panels cut to length and joined with pins. Padded dividers offer adjustable compartments. These differences help selection; they do not establish that both systems exist for every model. [1] [2]
Examples from the current range
The Peli 1200 Protector currently lists foam and no-foam versions. Availability depends on the colour and interior combination. Do not assume it offers the configurations of a larger model.
Online Peli 1535 Air configurations include foam, no foam, padded dividers and TrekPak. The Hybrid configuration is available on request. Contact us for pricing and lead time. A configuration list does not mean every colour and interior combination is currently available.
For compact equipment, explore small Peli cases; for more space, compare the Protector range. Check the model and configuration contents before confirming current availability.
Custom layouts and B2B quotations
Send equipment measurements and weight, a layout sketch, quantity, intended use and preferred date. Explain whether several cases need identical layouts or room for future accessories. Customisation options and commercial terms require confirmation for the individual project.
Choose an available 1200 configuration or request help selecting the case and interior.
Frequently asked questions
Is an empty case ready for sensitive equipment?
Plan how the contents will be supported and separated. Check the existing packaging or arrange an interior suitable for that kit.
Can I add foam later?
Check for a matching replacement set for the exact model and generation. A similar name or approximate size does not confirm compatibility.
How many centimetres should I leave around a device?
That depends on the equipment and application. Plan material on every side and between items, then confirm the required thickness when choosing or designing the insert.
Does every Peli case offer TrekPak or padded dividers?
No. Use the explicitly listed configurations and compatible accessories for the individual model. Request an individual quotation for the 1535 Hybrid.
